These spooky spider snacks aren’t just for the little ones; they’re a hit with adults and kids of all ages. However, there’s something undeniably special about watching the wide-eyed wonder of children as they transform a humble brownie bite into a cute, eight-legged arachnid. It’s a simple project that yields impressive, fun results, making it an unforgettable part of any Halloween celebration.
Why These Spooky Spider Brownies Are a Halloween Must-Have!
As many of you know, I’m a firm believer in embracing convenience when it comes to holiday treats, and there’s absolutely no shame in using store-bought ingredients to create magical moments. Why stress over complex recipes when you can achieve delightful results with minimal effort? These spider brownies perfectly embody that philosophy.
The Magic of No-Bake Halloween Treats
Starting with pre-made brownie bites means these spider treats are incredibly simple and quick to assemble. Forget about measuring flour, cracking eggs, or waiting for brownies to bake and cool. This no-bake approach makes them an ideal activity for even the youngest helpers in the kitchen. It’s a fantastic Halloween cooking activity that involves plenty of creativity and zero actual cooking, making it safe and enjoyable for everyone.
Did you see how we used store-bought Rice Krispie Treats to make these 3-ingredient mummy desserts? It’s another brilliant example of how easy and fun holiday treat making can be!
Perfect for All Ages (Especially Little Monsters!)
The beauty of these spider brownies lies in their universal appeal. Toddlers can practice fine motor skills by sticking on candy eyes, while older kids can take pride in carefully inserting the licorice legs. It’s an engaging, hands-on project that results in a delicious reward, fostering a sense of accomplishment and holiday spirit. Plus, who can resist a treat that stares back at you?
Choosing Your Brownie Foundation: Convenience Meets Creativity
While the recipe primarily champions the use of store-bought brownie bites for ultimate ease, you have options to suit your preference and time constraints. Both methods yield fantastic results, ensuring your Halloween spider brownies are as delicious as they are adorable.
Embracing the Ease of Store-Bought Brownie Bites
For those bustling days leading up to Halloween, store-bought brownie bites are an absolute lifesaver. They are uniformly sized, perfectly baked, and ready for immediate transformation. This option saves you significant time and effort, allowing you to focus on the fun decorating aspect with your family or quickly whip up a batch for an unexpected party invitation. Look for fudgy, dense brownie bites that will hold their shape well when poked.
Baking Your Own: Tips for Homemade Spider Brownies
If you love the aroma of freshly baked goods and prefer to make your brownies from scratch (or a box mix!), that’s perfectly fine too! You can easily achieve a similar shape to the store-bought bites by baking your brownies in a mini muffin tin. This method creates individual, perfectly portioned brownie rounds, ideal for your spider creations – much like we did for our dirt and worm brownie bites.
A Crucial Tip for Homemade Brownies: Be certain to refrigerate your homemade brownies briefly before poking the leg holes in them. Chilling them helps to stiffen them up significantly, preventing them from crumbling or falling apart when you insert the licorice laces. A good 20-30 minutes in the fridge should do the trick, ensuring clean holes and sturdy spider bodies.
More Spider Themed Party Treats:
If you’re hosting a full-blown arachnid-themed Halloween party, these spider brownies are just the beginning! Here are a few more creepy-crawly treats that will complete your spread and delight your guests:
- Spiderweb Cupcakes: Delicious cupcakes topped with intricate, edible spiderwebs.
- Rice Krispies Treat Spiders: Another fantastic no-bake option using a classic cereal treat.
- Oreo Spiders: Simple, iconic, and always a crowd-pleaser with those familiar cookie flavors.
- Black Widow Venom Moonshine (21+): A spooky concoction for the adult goblins and ghouls at your gathering.

Spider Brownies for Halloween
Author: Jaclyn
Ingredients
- 8 brownie bites
- licorice laces / strings cut into (64) 2-inch pieces
- 16 Candy eyeballs
- 2 Tablespoons confectioners sugar
- 1-3 drops water
Instructions
-
Use a lollipop stick (or something with a similar shape) to poke 4 holes in either side of each brownie.
-
Combine powdered sugar and water to create a thick icing that can be used “glue”. A little bit of water goes a long way so add only a very small drop, stir, and only add more if necessary.
-
When you have the proper consistency, add a dab of the icing to the back of each candy eyeball, then stick them on the brownies.
-
Lastly, dip the end of each “leg” in the icing, then into a hole in the brownie. Repeat until all the “spiders” have 8 legs.

Tips and Tricks for Perfect Spider Brownies Every Time
While this recipe is incredibly straightforward, a few expert tips can elevate your spider brownies from good to absolutely spooktacular! Follow these pointers for the best results, whether you’re a seasoned baker or a Halloween crafting novice.
Achieving the Perfect Icing “Glue” Consistency
The powdered sugar and water mixture acts as your edible adhesive, so getting the consistency right is key. You want it thick enough to hold the candy eyes and licorice legs securely, but not so thick that it’s clumpy, or too thin that it runs everywhere. Start with a very small amount of water (literally a few drops!) and mix well. If it’s too thick, add one more tiny drop at a time until you reach a smooth, paste-like consistency. If you accidentally add too much water, simply mix in a little more powdered sugar to thicken it up. This step is crucial for ensuring your spiders don’t lose their eyes or legs before they’re devoured!
Crafting Spidery Legs and Eyes
- Leg Placement: When inserting the licorice laces, aim for a slightly upward and outward angle. This gives your spiders a more dynamic, creepy-crawly appearance. You can gently bend the licorice laces slightly to create that natural spider leg “joint” look.
- Eye Adhesion: A small dab of your homemade icing on the back of each candy eyeball is all you need. Press firmly but gently onto the brownie bite. You can experiment with placing them close together for a more comical look, or slightly wider apart for a spookier vibe.
- Brownie Sturdiness: As mentioned, if using homemade brownies, ensure they are thoroughly cooled and even chilled slightly. A firm brownie is much easier to work with, preventing crumbles and ensuring the legs hold their position.
Creative Variations and Add-Ins
Want to customize your spider brownies even further? Get creative!
- Colorful Legs: If you can find different colored licorice laces (like red or green), these can add a fun, vibrant touch to your spiders.
- Web Effects: For an extra spooky touch, you can drizzle a thin white icing “web” over a platter before arranging your spider brownies on top.
- Sprinkles: A dash of black or orange sprinkles around the base of the brownie can add texture and festive color.
- Chocolate Glaze: Instead of the powdered sugar icing for the eyes, a tiny bit of melted chocolate or chocolate frosting can also work as a “glue.”
Making it a Family Affair: Kid-Friendly Halloween Fun
These spider brownies are more than just a recipe; they’re an experience! Involving kids in the kitchen (especially for no-bake activities) is a wonderful way to create lasting holiday memories. Here’s how to make it even more enjoyable:
- Assign Roles: Give each child a task. One can poke holes, another can cut licorice, and another can be in charge of “eye placement.” This ensures everyone feels involved and valued.
- Safety First: Since there’s no actual cooking, this recipe is quite safe. Just ensure any cutting of licorice is done with child-safe scissors or supervised closely if using a knife. Remind kids not to eat the ingredients until assembly is complete!
- Embrace Imperfection: Remind children that it’s about having fun, not making perfect, uniform spiders. Wonky eyes and crooked legs often add to the charm and make each spider unique!
Serving Your Spooky Spider Treats
Once your army of brownie spiders is complete, how do you best present them? Arrange them on a platter covered with fake spiderwebs for an extra spooky effect. Scatter some plastic spiders or rubber bats around the display to enhance the theme. These treats are perfect alongside other Halloween snacks like ghost-shaped cookies, pumpkin-spice drinks, or a bowl of “witch’s brew” punch. They’re sure to be the star of your dessert table and disappear quickly!
Get Ready for a Web of Deliciousness!
Whether you’re hosting a grand Halloween bash or simply looking for a fun, easy, and memorable activity with your kids, these spider brownies are the perfect solution. With minimal effort, simple ingredients, and maximum charm, you’ll create delightful, spooky treats that are guaranteed to bring smiles and screams (of delight!) to all who encounter them. Happy Halloween, and enjoy your delightfully creepy creations!
