Crafting these delightful peppermint bath bombs is a fun and straightforward process. Before you begin, gather all the necessary ingredients and supplies. Organization is key to a smooth crafting experience!

Peppermint Candy Cane Bath Bomb Ingredients

Essential Ingredients: What You’ll Need

Each ingredient plays a crucial role in creating the perfect bath bomb experience. Here’s a quick rundown:

  • Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate): The primary base for your bath bomb, reacting with citric acid to create that satisfying fizz.
  • Epsom Salt (Magnesium Sulfate): Known for its muscle-relaxing and soothing properties, enhancing the therapeutic benefits of your bath.
  • Citric Acid: The key to the fizz! When combined with baking soda and introduced to water, it creates the bubbly reaction.
  • Cornstarch: Helps bind the ingredients together, creating a harder bath bomb and contributing to a silky feel in the bathwater.
  • Fractionated Coconut Oil: A lightweight, non-greasy oil that moisturizes your skin and helps bind the dry ingredients. Fractionated coconut oil stays liquid at room temperature, making it ideal for bath bombs.
  • Peppermint Essential Oil: The star of the show, providing the refreshing aroma and potential therapeutic benefits. Ensure you use a high-quality, skin-safe essential oil.
  • Red or Pink Soap Colorant: Adds a festive touch to your bath bombs, giving them a lovely holiday hue. Opt for soap or cosmetic-grade colorants to avoid staining your tub.
  • Candy Canes: Crushed candy canes add a delightful festive look and a hint of extra peppermint scent, making these bath bombs truly special for Christmas.

Necessary Supplies: Tools for the Job

  • Bath Bomb Molds: Essential for shaping your bath bombs. Metal molds often work best for a clean release.
  • Large Glass or Metal Mixing Bowl: For combining your dry ingredients.
  • Small Mixing Bowl: For blending your wet ingredients.
  • Whisk: To ensure all dry ingredients are thoroughly mixed and free of clumps.
  • Spatula: Useful for pressing the mixture firmly into the molds.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Perfect Bath Bombs

Once you have everything laid out, follow these simple steps to create your beautiful peppermint bath bombs:

1. Combine Dry Ingredients: In your large glass or metal mixing bowl, add the baking soda, Epsom salt, citric acid, and cornstarch. Whisk these dry ingredients together thoroughly. It’s important to break up any clumps to ensure a smooth, consistent mixture and even fizzing later.

In your small mixing bowl, mix all your wet ingredients together.

2. Prepare Wet Ingredients: In your small mixing bowl, combine the water, fractionated coconut oil, peppermint essential oil, and your chosen red or pink soap colorant. Stir these wet ingredients well until they are fully integrated and the color is consistent.

Combine wet and dry ingredients

3. Slowly Combine Wet and Dry: This is a crucial step! Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, a little bit at a time. Whisk continuously as you add to ensure the liquid is evenly distributed without activating the fizzing reaction prematurely. If you add too much liquid too quickly, your bath bombs might fizz in the bowl instead of in the tub! Continue this process until all wet ingredients are combined and the mixture is uniform.

4. Test Consistency: Once everything is mixed, squeeze a small handful of the mixture in your hand. It should hold its shape and clump together, much like damp sand. If it feels too crumbly or doesn’t hold, add a tiny bit more water (about half a teaspoon at a time), mix thoroughly, and test again. Be careful not to add too much water!

5. Crush Candy Canes: For a festive touch, place your candy canes in a sealed plastic bag and gently crush them using a hammer or a rolling pin. You want small, chunky bits, not fine powder. This is also a great way to relieve some holiday stress!

6. Fill the Molds: Lightly spoon a small amount of the crushed candy canes into each half of your bath bomb molds. Then, spoon your bath bomb mixture into both halves of the mold, slightly overfilling each side. This ensures a strong bond when you press them together.

Press the bath bomb mixture into each mold, using a spatula to press it down as very as possible.

7. Press and Close: Press the bath bomb mixture down into each mold firmly, using a spoon or spatula to compact it as much as possible. Then, bring both sides of the molds together and press them tightly. Don’t twist; just press firmly to create a solid sphere.

8. Allow to Set: Carefully set your molded bath bombs aside and allow them to dry and harden completely. This usually takes between 8 to 24 hours, but for best results and durability, letting them set overnight is recommended. The longer they dry, the firmer they will be.

9. Demold Gently: When your bath bombs are fully set, it’s time to release them from their molds. Gently tap lightly on the top of each mold before slowly lifting the top half off. Repeat this carefully for the bottom half. If a bath bomb breaks, don’t worry! You can always re-pack the mixture into the mold.

When you’re ready to indulge in a luxurious, Christmas-scented bubble bath, simply drop one of your homemade peppermint bath bombs into a tub of warm water and enjoy the invigorating fizz and delightful aroma. Watch as it dissolves, releasing its skin-loving oils and muscle-soothing salts into your bath.

Tips for Success & Troubleshooting

  • Humidity is the Enemy: High humidity can make your bath bombs crumbly or activate them prematurely. Choose a dry day to make them, or use a dehumidifier.
  • Too Wet? If your mixture starts fizzing in the bowl, it’s too wet. You can try adding a little more baking soda and cornstarch to dry it out.
  • Too Dry? If your mixture isn’t holding its shape like damp sand, add water *very slowly*, half a teaspoon at a time, mixing thoroughly between additions.
  • Storage: Store your finished bath bombs in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. This will help them maintain their potency and prevent them from activating prematurely.
  • Packaging for Gifts: For gifting, wrap your bath bombs individually in shrink wrap, cellophane bags, or tissue paper, and tie with a festive ribbon. A small label with ingredients and usage instructions is a nice touch.

Equipment

  • 3 bath bomb molds (I used a 2.2 inch mold)

Supplies

  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup epsom salt
  • 1/4 cup citric acid
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1 Tablespoons water
  • 2 Tablespoons fractionated coconut oil
  • 10-12 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 4-5 drops red or pink soap colorant
  • 2-3 candy canes

Instructions

  • In a large glass or metal mixing bowl, whisk to combine baking soda, epsom salt, citric acid and cornstarch.
  • In a small mixing bowl, add the water, coconut oil, peppermint essential oil, and soap colorant. Stir well to combine.
  • Very slowly, pour a little of the wet mixture into the dry ingredients. You want to add it slowly so the baking soda mixture does not bubble and become activated. Whisk to distribute the wet mixture. Add a little more of the wet mixture and whisk again. Finally, add the rest of the wet mixture and whisk well until fully combined.
  • Place some of the bath bomb mixture into your hand and squeeze it. If it clumps like wet sand, then you are ready to move on to the next step. If not, add about 1 teaspoon of water and whisk again. You want the mixture to resemble damp sand. Set aside while you complete step 5.
  • Put candy canes in a sealed plastic baggie bag and crush with a hammer or rolling pin. Place about 2 tsp of the crushed candy canes into each side of your bath bomb molds (6 total).
  • Press the bath bomb mixture into each mold, using a spoon or spatula to press the mixture down as firmly as possible. To ensure the two sides stick together well, overfill each half of the mold slightly. Bring both sides of each mold together and press down to close tightly.
  • Allow bath bombs to set fully before removing from mold (8-24 hours).
  • When you are ready to remove your bath bombs from the mold, tap lightly on the top of each bath bomb and then slowly lift the top mold off. Repeat the process for the bottom mold.

Notes

STORAGE: Keep your peppermint bath bombs stored in a cool and dry place.

HOW TO USE: Fill your bathtub with warm water and drop a peppermint bath bomb into the tub.
