Wholesome Ingredients for a Healthier You

Beyond being delicious, these chicken tenders utilize simple, wholesome ingredients that contribute to a healthy diet. Boneless, skinless chicken breast is a lean protein powerhouse, essential for muscle building and satiety. Panko breadcrumbs provide an incredible crispness with fewer calories than traditional breading, and Parmesan cheese adds a depth of flavor without excessive fat. By baking them, we significantly reduce the need for unhealthy oils, making this dish a much lighter alternative to its fried counterparts. It’s a testament to how simple ingredients can come together to create something truly nourishing and satisfying.

Versatility for Any Occasion

While perfect for a quick dinner, the adaptability of these Parmesan Chicken Tenders extends far beyond. Serve them as a gourmet appetizer with a selection of dipping sauces at your next gathering. Chop them up and add them to fresh salads for a protein-packed lunch. Tuck them into whole wheat pitas with some fresh veggies for a dynamic sandwich. Their robust flavor profile also makes them a fantastic partner for various side dishes, from steamed green beans to a vibrant quinoa salad. These tenders are not just a recipe; they are a foundation for countless healthy and creative meal possibilities.

Essential Ingredients for Crispy Parmesan Chicken Tenders

Crafting these perfectly crispy and flavorful tenders requires a straightforward list of common ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need, along with a few insights into their role:

  • 24 oz boneless skinless chicken breast: This lean protein forms the base of our tenders. I typically use 4 individual 6oz breasts, which yields 16 strips for 4 servings. Ensure they are trimmed of any excess fat.
  • ½ cup panko crumbs: The secret to their incredible crispiness! Panko breadcrumbs are lighter and flakier than regular breadcrumbs, absorbing less oil and delivering a superior crunch.
  • 5 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese: This is where much of the savory, umami flavor comes from. Freshly grated Parmesan offers the best taste and texture, but pre-grated works well too.
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder: A foundational flavor that pairs perfectly with Parmesan. It provides a consistent garlic taste without the moisture of fresh garlic.
  • Dash of salt and pepper: Essential seasonings to enhance all the other flavors. Adjust to your personal preference.
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning: A blend of herbs like oregano, basil, thyme, and rosemary that adds an aromatic, classic Italian profile.
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour: Used for the initial dredge, it helps the egg wash adhere better to the chicken, creating a more uniform coating for the panko.
  • 2 eggs: The binding agent that ensures the flavorful panko coating sticks to every piece of chicken.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Make Perfect Parmesan Chicken Tenders

Creating these delightful chicken tenders is surprisingly simple. Follow these steps for crispy, flavorful results every time:

  1. Prepare Your Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). This ensures the oven is at the optimal temperature for even cooking and crisping as soon as your tenders go in. While the oven heats, you can start prepping your chicken.
  2. Cut the Chicken: Take your boneless, skinless chicken breasts and slice them into strips. The ideal size is really a matter of personal preference – whether you like them thicker and heartier or thinner and crispier. For this recipe, aiming for 16 strips from 4 chicken breasts ensures you get 4 servings, each with 4 tenders. Try to make them relatively uniform in thickness for even cooking.
  3. Set Up Your Breading Stations: This is a crucial step for an organized and efficient process. In a medium-sized bowl or a large ziplock bag (which can make coating even easier and mess-free), combine the panko crumbs, grated Parmesan, garlic powder, a generous dash of salt and pepper, and the Italian seasoning. Mix these ingredients thoroughly to ensure the flavors are evenly distributed. On a separate flat surface, like a shallow plate, spread out the 2 tablespoons of flour. In another bowl, whisk the 2 eggs until they are well combined.
  4. The Breading Process: Now for the fun part! Take each chicken strip and follow the classic breading technique: first, dredge it lightly in the flour, shaking off any excess. This helps create a dry surface for the egg to adhere to. Next, dip the floured chicken into the whisked egg, ensuring it’s fully coated. Finally, press the egg-dipped chicken into your panko and cheese mixture, making sure every surface is generously covered. The more coating, the crispier and more flavorful your tenders will be! Repeat this process for all chicken strips.
  5. Bake to Golden Perfection: Arrange all the coated chicken strips in a single layer on a baking tray. For easy cleanup and to prevent sticking, I highly recommend lining your baking tray with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 25 minutes. To ensure they crisp up evenly on all sides, remember to turn the tenders over a few times during the cooking process. You’re looking for a beautiful golden-brown color and an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). Once cooked, remove from the oven and let them rest for a minute or two before serving. Enjoy your perfectly crispy and flavorful Parmesan Chicken Tenders!

  • Boneless skinless chicken breast: 0 points (a fantastic lean protein, a ZeroPoint food on most WW plans)

Creative Ways to Customize Your Parmesan Chicken Tenders

While this recipe is fantastic as is, there are many ways to adapt it to your taste preferences or dietary needs:

  • Speed It Up with Seasoned Panko: For an even quicker preparation, opt for pre-seasoned panko crumbs. Many brands offer Italian-seasoned panko, which can save you a step in mixing the spices. Just be mindful of the sodium content if you’re watching that!
  • Lower Points with Protein Chips: To reduce the point value even further and add an interesting twist, try using crushed protein chips (like Quest chips) instead of traditional panko crumbs. This can boost protein and lower carbs, offering a unique texture and flavor.
  • Delicious Dipping Sauces: Elevate your tenders with a flavorful dipping sauce. My Zero Point Ranch Dressing is an excellent (and guilt-free!) choice. Other great options include sugar-free BBQ sauce, a light honey mustard, or a spicy sriracha mayo made with light mayonnaise.
  • Air Fryer Alternative: If you prefer the convenience and extra crispiness of an air fryer, these tenders are perfect for it! Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Place the breaded chicken tenders in a single layer in the air fryer basket, ensuring they are not overcrowded. Cook for 12-15 minutes, flipping them halfway through, until golden brown and cooked through. This method often yields an even crispier result!
  • Spice It Up: If you enjoy a bit of heat, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes to your panko mixture for a spicy kick.
  • Herb Garden Freshness: Incorporate fresh chopped herbs like parsley or chives into the panko mix for a burst of fresh flavor.

Expert Tips for the Best Parmesan Chicken Tenders

To ensure your Parmesan Chicken Tenders turn out perfectly crispy and delicious every time, keep these practical tips in mind:

  • Storage and Reheating: These Parmesan Chicken Tenders will keep beautifully in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. However, I generally don’t recommend freezing them, as the panko coating can become soggy upon thawing and reheating, losing its desirable crisp texture. For reheating leftovers, the best method to revive their crispness is to pop them back into an air fryer at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes, or a conventional oven at 375°F (190°C) for 10-15 minutes, until heated through and crispy.
  • Even Slicing: Uniformly sized chicken strips are key to ensuring all pieces cook at the same rate. This prevents some pieces from being overcooked and dry while others are still undercooked.
  • Don’t Overcrowd the Pan: When baking, arrange the chicken tenders in a single layer with a little space between each piece. Overcrowding can steam the chicken instead of crisping it, leading to a less desirable texture. If necessary, use two baking sheets.
  • Press for Success: When coating the chicken in the panko mixture, really press the crumbs onto the chicken. This ensures a thick, even layer that will create that satisfying crunch.

Serving Suggestions for Your Parmesan Chicken Tenders

These versatile Parmesan Chicken Tenders pair wonderfully with a variety of side dishes, making for a complete and balanced meal:

  • Fresh Green Salad: A simple mixed green salad with a light vinaigrette offers a refreshing contrast.
  • Roasted Vegetables: Broccoli, asparagus, or zucchini roasted alongside your chicken are easy and nutritious.
  • Whole Wheat Pasta: Serve them atop a small portion of whole wheat pasta with a marinara sauce for a deconstructed chicken Parmesan feel.
  • Quinoa or Brown Rice: For a heartier side, a serving of fluffy quinoa or brown rice adds complex carbohydrates.
  • Steamed Green Beans or Corn: Quick, easy, and classic vegetable sides that complement chicken perfectly.
  • Low-Carb Options: Cauliflower rice, zucchini noodles, or a side of sautéed spinach make excellent low-carb accompaniments.

Frequently Asked Questions About Parmesan Chicken Tenders

Here are answers to some common questions you might have about making these delicious tenders:

Q: Can I make these gluten-free?
A: Absolutely! Simply substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend and use gluten-free panko breadcrumbs. The rest of the ingredients are naturally gluten-free.

Q: What kind of Parmesan cheese should I use?
A: For the best flavor, freshly grated Parmesan from a block is always recommended. However, pre-grated Parmesan from the dairy section of your grocery store works perfectly well and is convenient. Avoid the shelf-stable, powdered Parmesan if possible, as it lacks the same robust flavor.

Q: Can I prepare the chicken tenders ahead of time?
A: You can bread the chicken tenders up to an hour in advance and keep them refrigerated. However, for the crispiest results, it’s best to bake them shortly after breading. The longer they sit, the more moisture the panko can absorb, potentially reducing their crispiness.

Q: How do I know when the chicken is fully cooked?
A: The best way to ensure chicken is safely cooked is to use a meat thermometer. Insert it into the thickest part of the largest tender; it should register an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). Visually, they should be golden brown on the outside and no longer pink in the middle.
